RitrattoRosso Fellini Catalano

RI-TRATTO ROSSO. FEDERICO FELLINI

To mark the 100th anniversary of Federico Fellini’s birth, we were commissioned to portray part of his life in the Cinecittà studios. The significant collaboration with the Istituto Luce Cinecittà and the Elisabetta Catalano Archive resulted in an exciting exhibition.

Teatro1 allowed us to build 12–metre–high monoliths, to have white sheets coming down from the roof which were moved by passing visitors. This created a system of perspectives that, from every point of view of the exhibition, could hide and reveal the presence of other visitors. The lights and sounds filled the atmosphere with suspense and it feels like being relieved of time.

RitrattoRosso Fellini Catalano

The whole idea of Ri-tratto Rosso revolves around the concept of time that does not come back; although, thanks to Fellini, time does come back. The focus of my research became restoring the dreamlike atmosphere of Fellini’s visual sensibility through color and sound effects. I tried to imagine the best way to translate this same atmosphere so that everyone could understand it today. Therefore, I let the space do the talking and filled it with time.
